CoreVac boards are a unique surfboard construction technique that we are stoked to offer and here is a little insight into the process that is involved in making one.
Every standard polyurethane board is built with one layer of light weight fiberglass on the bottom and two similar layers on the top. Each layer has only two directions of fiber orientation, 0 and 90 degrees. CoreVac uses a multi directional aerospace cloth and this cloth has an increased amount of linear strands as opposed to regular cloth. Using epoxy resin, the top and the bottom are glassed with this cloth using a vacuum bagging process and this greatly increases the overall strength and also provides a more uniform flex. With the lower resin/cloth ratios, a composite board can be built that is far lighter and stronger than a standard polyurethane board. Optimizing the resin/cloth ratios also reduces the chance of denting and fracturing due to everyday wear and tear on the surfboard because the cloth does the work as opposed to the resin which is inherently more fragile. This glassing is done over high quality 1 ½ lb. EPS cores and it creates a shell that the CoreVac manufacturers say has a impact strength of over 1000 lbs. per square inch on the deck of the surfboard as compared to a standard board having only 120-170 lbs. per square inch. In other words, the deck is a lot stronger. Vacuum bagging gets rid of the excess resin and creates a stronger bond between the cloth and the blank. There is no way to build a stronger board than vacuum bagging and by using the strongest and the lightest materials available, a far better product is produced that is felt both in the boards durability and also in its ride. The boards are lighter, stronger, and faster.
Beyond just the strength and the weight factors of this construction technique, CoreVac boards also have a different flex pattern to that of any standard surfboard. Flex is good and helps give the board a feeling of release and responsiveness. In CoreVac boards, noticeable acceleration is felt out of each turn due to the flex characteristics of this technology. CoreVac boards flex and release provide speed and a quick response out of each turn. Also, EPS cores (styrofoam) are known to produce a livelier, more buoyant feel in the water. So, between the flex pattern, the weight, the core, and the actual shape, you have a surfboard that is not only high end in construction but also high end in performance. With CoreVac technology, it’s as much about the performance as it is the construction.
One other point worth noting concerning CoreVac technology is that you are not locked in with set models. Certain composite boards on the market only have their specific models and they really have nothing to offer in the way of customizing the board for you. They really are, in a sense, pop out boards because what you see on the rack is what you are going to get and nothing more. That may be okay for some people but one of the best things about getting a new board is that you do have the option of having that board custom made for you. CoreVac boards are shaped just like regular boards allowing you to customize your board to your own specific needs if you so desire. A high end composite surfboard, built to your own specifications and for the conditions you will be surfing in, is something worth taking advantage of.
Although this technology is not new, it is being further developed and perfected by CoreVac to give you a more durable board with a much higher strength to weight ratio then a regular polyurethane board. I’m stoked to make this technology available in my line of boards and I’m stoked on the amount of success I’ve had with it as well.
" Even though I have shaped tens of thousands of boards, I am still a student when it comes to the equipment that we should be riding. I've always said surfing is all about having fun, no matter what your level of ability is. The truth is, while not everyone necessarily rips, everyone is capable of having fun. I'm learning, by firsthand experience, that sometimes you just need to be practical and realistic about your ability and what you are riding. Don't let the conditions of the surf or poor judgement in the equipment you choose to ride, dictate your session. Know your options and change up the board you are riding if you need to and I promise, if you do that, you will re-energize your surfing and rekindle the stoke you may have thought you lost..."
